Klang Valley - what's in the name?
I wonder how did Klang Valley got its name? Why 'Klang' was chosen instead of another name. Why not 'ampang valley' or 'bt caves valley' or 'kepong valley'.

Anyone knows the history behind the name?

The valley is named after Klang River, the principal river that flows through it, which is closely linked to the early development of the area as a cluster of tin mining towns in the late 19th century.

If you have to involve in why is "Klang" being used instead of "Other Name", I got one concept for this.

Let me ask you something. As you know that most of our citizen is not native. Even Malays are Bumiputera but they are also not natives. They come from Indonesia instead.

So, if everyone have to reach MY from ship or boat, they have to first reach a port. So that port Klang is the first destination and Klang will be the first accommodation for those incomer. Impossible they can suddenly land at KL at the first moment they reach MY right? So now Klang is the one of the reason everyone can name it.

Now, the story for the river part. Do you think that the up flow or the down flow of the river will form a larger river? Of course is the down flow which is the part where it will accumulate the water and flow into the sea. Perhaps the source of Klang river in KL(or wherever) is slim like the "Longkang" in front your house, but when come to Klang city it is already look not-so-like-longkang.

And how much derivatives can a river have? A lot of small stream flow into a larger stream at the up flow to form a larger river. The river only can be identified clearly after it flow for a long way and before it enter the sea. So that this is name "Klang River" instead of "AmpangKepongKualaLumpurShahAlam River".

Anyway this is only my concept.

The name 'Klang' already known long before Kuala Lumpur or Ampang or Bt Caves or Kepong settlements exist. It's famous because Tun Perak - Bendahara of 15th century Melaka Sultanates in which, came from there.
