Malaysia seriously views allegation on bomber


PHUKET: Malaysia is ready to cooperate with Indonesian authorities as it seriously views the allegation that Friday's bombings in Jakarta were masterminded by Malaysian-born Noordin Mohammed Top.

Foreign Ministry Secretary-General Tan Sri Rastam Mohd Isa said Wisma Putra hoped that Indonesia would share any information about Noordin's involvement in the bombings on the JW Marriott and RitzCarlton hotels.

"If there is any information, please pass (it) to our authorities. We are keen to know and will cooperate fully as we always do with our neighbours when it comes to terrorism," he told the Malaysian media on the sidelines of the Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) here.

He, however, said that so far, there was no concrete evidence, and such an allegation was only reported by the media, adding that Wisma Putra had yet to receive any request from the Indonesian authorities on the matter.

Rastam is leading a Malaysian delegation at the meeting which kicked off Friday, to prepare for the 42nd Asean Ministerial Meeting (AMM), the PostMinisterial Conferences (PMC) and the Asean Regional Forum (ARF).

Foreign Minister Datuk Anifah Aman is expected to arrive here Sunday.

The AFP quoted Indonesian security ministry's anti-terror desk chief Ansyaad Mbai as saying that there was strong evidence that Noordin was behind the attacks.

Indonesian police said the homemade bombs were identical to those used in previous attacks linked to Noordin, one of Asia's most wanted terrorist who has been hiding in the republic for several years.

Noordin, a former accountant, is a member of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) extremist network. He grabbed international attention after the 2002 bombing in Bali and the 2003 attack on the JW Marriott hotel in Jakarta.

Rastam said the terrorism issue would be discussed by ministers during the meeting here.

During the 16th ARF where United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would be attending, foreign ministers would adopt an ARF Work Plan on Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime.

The Work Plan is considered a long-term strategy of ARF to deal with terrorism and transnational crime in all dimensions, and in cooperation with other international forums.

Particular emphasis is placed on drugs, biological terrorism and biological security, as well as computer security and computer terrorism. - Bernama
