What ntdote mean was, to see certain team get thrashed in both matches was not good considering a prestige of competition like Champions League has.

That is, I'm not denying a great performance by Bayern and Liverpool, but the scoreline doesn't reflect the quality of those teams that lost last night (Real Madrid and Sporting Lisbon). Given different circumstances, I believe those team will do better.

So what's wrong with the current UCL qualification system? U mean the old system is better??
Do u remember why the current UCL was designed to replace the old format?? The elite clubs in Europe (group of 14 or 16) threatened to pull out of UEFA b4 the Champions League was introduced. The old Euro cup was not profitable enough for the elite clubs to sustained bcoz they play too many lousy opponents that do not bring in the crowd and only injured their expensive players. The league format among the elites increased the UCL's popularity & most important profitability. England actually had 3 reps b4 but bcoz of their club's good performance was then increased to 4 clubs. Germany decreased from 4 to 3, if I am not wrong. Spain & Italian clubs also has 4 each!

Read my post above. I'm not saying that the current format was lousy or the old system was better.

There's nothing wrong with UEFA current format. The format (seeding teams by their nation's co-efficient system) was made to enable UEFA to distribute television revenue money evenly to the team based on their final positions after Champions League finals.

But by doing so, teams who has better co-efficiency are forced (indirectly) to perform really well in their main league in order to maintain their nation's co-effiecient points so that their league will entitled to sent certain number of teams to compete in UEFA Champions League. This is why teams like Real Madrid who historically known as great teams (the most winner infact) in Champions League performs below expectations - because of so many highly competitive games in their own league, domestic cups plus CL's matches itself and also some of their core players whom also play for their own respective nations in an international matches thus unable to cope with it's pressure.

Which results into partly a reason why they got trashed by Liverpool last night.

So basically what I'm saying was, teams who qualifies for CL especially from highly competitive league such as EPL, Bundesliga, Serie A and Spanish La Liga are playing too many games hence affecting their own performance in CL.

lets discuss by the way u discuss it..
look at the history of european football and we know english league aint the best....
italy, spain and england all have won 11 times but italians have the most runner ups with 14, followed by spain 9 and england 5...
it seems like italian and spanish had more domination in europe all this while..lol

so if we're looking at current football...yeah...i do agree, english teams are the best...
and favourites for me are both barca and bayern...hoho..with that trashing especially...then followed by english teams, all equal strength
huhuhu...gonna be fun watching from the quarter finals onwards...

ur explanation of why Real Madrid lost badly was also quite unacceptable as I am sure the other teams in the last 16 also played many many games b4 the UCL games.

ok probably the word "bad" shouldnt be use but definitely there's a major flaw which can be improved. I wouldnt know how to do it if u ask me but for me there's still room for improvement to get the best out of europe.

Agree with u ntdote.....there's always room for improvement !!

Maybe WE (all football fans in the forum) can come up with new ideas that can improve the UCL.........

My opinion : One thing that disturbs me is that the rich teams are getting richer while the poor teams getting left further behind. Probably can turn the qualifying rounds into a league system as well..

UEFA should go ahead and cap the players salary and restrict foreign players in each team on the field.
